The Rothschild family
The Rothschild family began as a family of five sons and a father who birthed a banking dynasty in the 1800s. The family reached the height of their fortune in the 19th century, making them the largest private wealth in the world. However, the family’s great wealth had decreased recently and thus was shared among its many descendants in the 20th century.
In this modern era, the family is still actively involved in the business world, having a great line of interests in real estate, financial services, agriculture, mining, philanthropy, and winemaking.
Early years of the Rothschild
The first recorded ancestor of the Rothschild family was Izaak Elchanan Rothschild. The family name “Rothschild” means “Red shield” – a reference to the original family’s home in Frankfurt, Germany. The family was not very popular with the international community for 200 years.
However, things took a positive turn in 1744 when Mayer A. Rothschild. His father was in the money-changing business and was actively involved with the Prince of Hesse. This relationship with the Prince laid a strong foundation for the family’s connection with the royal family in the future. Moving forward, Mayer founded the family’s finance business in a Jewish community in Frankfurt, from there, he expanded his influence across the European continent. To keep the business in absolute control of the family, Mayer appoints each of his sons to oversee his five major financial businesses.
What’s interesting about the Rothschild family is how they managed to live a contented life despite their international banking dynasty and kept their family’s early business history away from the public.
The genesis of the banking empire
In 1763, at the age of 19, Mayer A. Rothschild came back to Frankfurt to join his brothers in their father’s trading business. He sold rare coins and his collection got the patronage of the Crown Prince Wilhelm of Hesse. This cemented his relationship with the crown and also developed more relationships with other noble families.
By permission, Rothschild got the title of the Crown Agent, or Court Factor, from Wilhelm. This award is an honorary title that showed that Rothschild had done services for the royal family and gave him the luxury to hang the shield bearing the coat of arms of Hesse and Hanau.
Mayer married Gutle Schanpper, daughter of a court factor and money changer. She gave birth to ten children for Mayer: five sons and five daughters.
Their banking business grew exponentially during the French Revolution. Moreso, they made payments from Britain to hire Hessian Mercenaries soldiers.
From 1824 to 1877, the family had 36 marriages of its male descendants. Most of the marriages are between first cousins or within the family, and only two of these marriages are otherwise.
Modern era
Though they have amassed fortunes, the Rothschilds in this modern era have taken a more conservative approach to the banking and finance business at the international level. The family has thrown some of their estate’s art collections to charitable causes. The Rothschilds seldom display their lifestyles out in the open. The most essential owned business for the Rothschild is the Rothschild Group – this group controls some of the Rothschild financial firms around the world.
